Stocks Decline as Middle East Conflict Boosts Oil Prices
October 4, 2024Japan stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the Nikkei 225 down 2.22% as losses in the Transportation Equipment, Power, and Transport sectors weighed on shares. At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 declined 2.22%. Among the top performers on the Nikkei 225 were Inpex Corp. (TYO:1605), up 4.41%, Pacific Metals Co., Ltd. (TYO:5541), up 4.02%, and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (TYO:5713), up 3.22%. On the other hand, the worst performers included TDK Corp (TYO:6762), down 5.13%, Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. (TYO:3099), down 4.95%, and Advantest Corp. (TYO:6857), down 4.85%. Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 2920 to 739, with 198 ending unchanged. The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was down 12.33% to 24.75. In commodities trading, crude oil for November delivery rose 1.63% to $70.97 a barrel, Brent oil for delivery in December increased 1.52% to $74.68 a barrel, and the December Gold Futures contract fell 0.78% to $2,669.20 a troy ounce. The USD/JPY was up 0.24% to 143.91, while the EUR/JPY rose 0.22% to 159.25. The US Dollar Index Futures were up 0.07% at 101.00.
